Step 1: Knives

When you’re getting started in the kitchen, the first thing you’re going to need is a good chef’s knife. I use two higher-end knives on a regular basis, and I also have a less expensive option as well.

I used a Wusthof Gran Prix ii 10-inch chef’s knife all through culinary school, and it truly became an extension of my arm. Apparently they don’t make it anymore, but you can still get the Wusthof Classic 10-inch version on Amazon here: https://amzn.to/3QDopwm

Another utility piece that you’ll find more uses for than you can imagine is a great pair of kitchen shears. When I was working in restaurants, these were one of the first things out of my bag every morning, along with my knife. You should look for a pair that pulls apart for easier cleaning. Step 2: Cutting Boards

I’ve been using some great cutting boards since early on in my channel. My main requirements are non-slip feet, and it has to be dishwasher safe. You can get this great set of Farberware boards here: https://amzn.to/3E6RpVD

Step 3: Cookware

One of the things I use most often the cooktop is a sturdy, medium-sized sauté pan. It should have a lid, it needs to be able to go in the oven, and it should be dishwasher safe. Clad aluminum is the only serious choice. I have used this All-Clad 3 qt model for a long time: https://amzn.to/47TWJte

Next is another stalwart kitchen workhorse, a good saucepan. As the name implies, you’ll use it to make sauces, as well as other things like cooking rice, heating vegetables, or just boiling water. Another one of my favorite and most used pieces of cookware is an enameled cast iron Dutch oven. They can be pricey, but I have been using mine for over 20 years. If you take care of it, this is a piece that you will leave for your kids or maybe even your grandkids. It can be used on the cooktop, and it can go in the oven to do low and slow braising if you don’t use a slow cooker. When it’s time for lasagna or any casserole, You’ll need a great 9x13 inch baking dish. I use a heavy, cast-iron model produced by the Crock Pot brand. It’s hand wash only, but it goes from prep to oven to table with ease. The heavy cast iron retains heat well, and you can choose from a variety of finishes to suit your own personal taste.
